Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is calling on President Viktor Yushchenko to cancel the Independence Day military parade and use the funds for the flood relief efforts in
Tymoshenko’s letter to Yushchenko was posted on the Ukrayinska Pravda website.
“When tens of thousands of Ukrainians have lost their homes and basic needs and are in a difficult psychological state, a parade of armies, artillery salutes and fireworks will be regarded as a call to human misfortune and will be negatively assessed by Ukrainian society and the international committee,” reads the letter.
In light of this, Tymoshenko is asking Yushchenko to cancel the order on the military parade in Kyiv on August 24 and “use additional funds planned for the preparations for assistance to flood victims and rebuilding infrastructure.”
“The implementation of this will be positively assessed by all segments of the population and will serve to increase the level of trust to the authorities,” writes Tymoshenko.
