Yulia Tymoshenko: Ukrainians Have a Good Chance

0942, 27 October 2004
Print version Send email to editor Discuss
Interview for “Nasha Stolytsja” newspaper. Conversation had been held by Ivan Chuha, Ljudmyla Mykytjuk, Olha Dubovyk
This bright star of the Ukrainian political sky is called by people Yulia in short. Her woman’s mind is being compared by men to that of a computer. Her really strong will and self-control would be an honor to the elite of any civilized country of the world. Besides, her feminine attractiveness has caused the “political” love phenomenon on the part of men constituting the potential electorate. However, Yulia Tymoshenko is the only opposition leader who has not yielded to the temptation to run for the election on her own. May be it is only she – the woman – who realizes fully the importance of combined efforts aimed at the real victory gaining in order longsuffering Ukraine revives finally and lives a decent, prosperous European way of life.

At the request of many readers that address “Home” Foundation and the editorial staff of the newspaper we have asked Lady Y. to share her opinions on the election situation and her prognoses.

“People are afraid of a third term”

- ÂToday there is a lot of fairy tales spread all over Ukraine concerning the scenario implemented by force that is being prepared by Bankova-str. Do you think that some demon cherishes a plan to cancel or to disrupt the presidential election in order to announce an extraordinary situation? Or may be there will be a small rain out of this big cloud as the Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn says?

- The scenario by force has been launched already. The first signs of that are hidden in the most open place that is on TV. Pay attention, no news program on the authority controlled channels does not avoid sabre-ratting. You can see how Kuchma visits the base of militia team which is specially trained for the force missions against demonstrations (helmets, armored jackets and armored troop-carrier are being demonstrated close-up in order to be more convincing). You can see also the training exercises practiced by “Sokil”, “Berkut” or some other special mission teams in the courtyard of the Central Election Committee building. There is no official information who were these people in fact. According to the press it is not observers but pyrotechnics who are preparing to work at voting stations of Donetsk region. Who is going to benefit of that? Is it the opposition that is for sure going to win or is it the authority realizing that it has no chances? Somebody who dislikes this country very much has prompted the scenario according to which one spark will be quite enough to cause that the situation is beyond the control. But the state of emergency will not help then even the people who have worked out that scenario.

The authority talks on the unreality of the situation controlled by force so long as it considers that it preserves at least one chance out of a thousand to win using manipulations of the budget money, mass brain-washing through the total control of the media space, secretive fabrications of the election results and so on. But in case the victory of the opposition is obvious and recognized by the world community the state criminals knowing very well what kind of future is awaiting for them if the present authority loses will resort to inciting of the legal ground for the election result canceling. In order to calm the fooled voters they will announce the state of emergency. This is why we must win having such a reserve of votes that the authority’s efforts to revise the victory of the democratically elected President would not be a success and would not be recognized by the international law. I am convinced that the nation of Ukraine is able to defend the results of it own will. Wise fellows working for the secret services did not take into the account one thing: people are afraid not of the OMON helmets but of a third term for Kuchma.

- Valerij Pustovojtenko intimidates Ukraine by “chestnut revolution”. Many people remind of the Georgian variant. Please, comment on the PDP leader’s declaration.

- What are these talks for? They are to connect the opposition to the plan of mythical coup-de-tat created by the unhealthy imagination of the authority’s political technologists. “Chestnut revolution” will take place but it will not remind the one that is being described by the authority propaganda machine. Chestnut revolution-2004 is the constitutional defense of the nation’s will by the nation itself. Politicians can be destroyed in many ways. They can be poisoned, crossed by a KamAZ, taken to the forest and left there forever, put behind the bars and taken to the court. But the authority is in panic terror in front of the nation. They are trembling with fear and all these fairy tales on how it is going to be as the three of them, Kuchma-Yanukovych-Medvedchuk, have planned are the tranquilizers for themselves in order to have a sleep at night.

- How do you assess the law-enforcement bodies actions against the civil action “It is Time”? Is it an effort to push the opposition to make incautious steps in response which will lead to the certain actions on the part of the law-enforcement representatives?

- There is nothing to asses here. They had put stealthily something and later they found that. The representative of the secret service took to pieces the training (!) grenade with trembling arms and demonstrated a quartz watch as such that was to blow up a half of Europe. It was funny and disgusting. Classical provocation used thousands times by the Soviet KGB. In order to arrest a political suspect the search was led in his dwelling during which “bourgeois” literature, drugs, weapon were put stealthily. A half of a year ago here in Kyiv the police had brutally taken out of the car of a People’s Deputy a Russian businessman whose business took fancy of Kuchma and his surrounding. In his pocket there was a gun that did not belong to him at all.

Knowing what was going on in the building of the organization “It is Time” it is not difficult to figure out what had taken place there. At first the People’s Deputy Taras Stetskiv together with militiamen examined all the rooms in the building. Then another group of militiamen came, drove everybody out and then without any witnesses(!) found the explosive. Ukrainian TV quickly connected the opposition to the terrorism as a phenomenon evoking natural allergy and fear in Russia as well as in the USA and in Europe. So I would not be surprised very much if before the end of the campaign the nation will find out all of a sudden that Ben Laden and Viktor Yushchenko are in blood relationship with Saddam Husean…

“Nation Has Been Waiting Too Long”

- Moscow political scientist Stanislav Bjelkovskyj believes that the scenario of the election disruption was taken to Moscow by the Head of the AP Viktor Medvedchuk in order it was approved there. Medvedchuk denies that. However, the vice-Speaker of the Russian State Duma Vladimir Zhyrinovsky is “on tour” in Ukraine at the moment. And in the end of October the President of Russia Vladimir Putin is going to visit Ukraine. What is going on?

- Bjelkovskyj is from Moscow so he knows better who comes in and goes out of the Kremlin gate, and I have no grounds to distrust him. If Medevedchuk got the approval of the election disruption scenario it is no wonder that the representatives of Russian politics make journeys to Ukraine. Accomplishing of the plan approved on “such” a level needs to be constantly inspected by those who approved it. It could be so that they invested more than simply words of support and now are naturally interested in maximum benefit from the investments in Ukraine. However, it is not a fortuitousness that the Kremlin let to know who is the author of the election disruption scenario, that is Viktor Medvedchuk. Obviously, the Russian authority seeks to avoid the participation in the provocations of the Ukrainian authority.

- Can we affirm that the Kremlin staked on Yanukovych? Or is it Kuchma-3?

- We can call the unwillingness of official Moscow overcome the stereotypes that are imposed by the Ukrainian authority as one of the biggest disappointments of the present campaign. It is strange for me that Vladimir Putin allowed to use himself and turned out to be so much influenced by the “white-and-black” scheme that he is ready not to see any other colors. I think this is not a political matter but rather a matter of some of the Russian authority elite representatives mentality. They are led in their personal sympathies by the subjective moments. We may only imagine what kind of effort had to be made by Putin, the cadre officer of the secret services, to support the proposal to advance for the presidential office in Ukraine a man whose past evokes many questions from the point of view of the Law. On the other hand, the special moments of Yanukovych’s biography allow the Kremlin to guide him as they previous convictions. I want to believe that the position of Russia towards Ukraine is not that simple. Russian elite cannot stake only on Yanukovych. In case of his loss the relations with Ukraine would need to be created from the very beginning.

- You go to regions a lot? What kind of moods are there?

- Your newspaper would be prohibited on the grounds of bad language vocabulary publishing in case you publish everything that people in regions today say about the authority and the election campaign. People are filled with indignation by the administrative pressure. We have collected thousands of evidences that students, budget realm workers and many other people have been made to sign for Yanukovych. The nation is ready to vote in favor of Yushchenko and to defend is choice. People do not trust the authority and realize that it will resort to any possible methods of the self-perpetuation. At meetings the readiness not to let to steel our victory is demonstrated. The nation has been waiting too long for the opportunity to remove the present authority legally during the election andit will not allow to destroy that suffered chance. People of Dnipropetrovsk and of Ternopil have the same opinion on the present authority and its candidate Yanukovych.

- By the way, don’t they throw eggs at you any more? An egg is now the favorite props in Ukrainian anecdotes.

- There is a monument in favor of a pig in Ukraine already and now they say in a village or in a town somewhere there has been erected a monument in favor of an egg. This is an interesting course of the monumental art. Now, after the events in Ivano-Frankivsk we have our hens that have rescued Ukraine as well as geese rescued Rome.

During my tours in the Eastern part of Ukraine our car had been followed by a “tail”, a bus filled with young people of a very specific appearance. They say that after they came to the destination an egg deficit took place in local shops.

Eggs were thrown but I should disappoint you. There was nothing interesting at all. Nobody fainted away, fell and got to the reanimation.

- Earlier you stated that one more attempt upon the life of Viktor Yushchenko could be made. The same was stated by Mr. Zhyrinovskyj when visiting Ukraine but his political imagination led him as far as to the assumption that it could be the West who is interested in that.

- ÓIn the Administration of the President a couple of dozens of the authority actions variants has been worked out. An attempt upon the life of Viktor Yushchenko’s life is one of the methods to lieave the democratic opposition without a mighty leader that is supported by the nation has every chance to win. We should not exclude that poisoning of him is only the first stage of the mission concerning Viktor Yushchenko. This authority has nothing to lose so it is ready for everything.

ÄîIt is necessary to take into account the declaration of Vladimir Zhyrinovsky as serious as everything that is being stated by that politician, that is using the moderate curiosity of a psychotherapist. A status of a clown serving the monarch had always a peculiarity. Under the cover of a fool it was possible to say the truth sometimes. It was the truth that anyone daring to say that would give his life for that. So in the stream of consciousness of Zhyrinovskyj there waas something that makes to think about it. Does it not remind a logical chain the information of the political scientist Bjelkovskyj and a warning or threat of Zhrinovskyj? On the other hand the fact that it is Zhyrinovskyj who came to Ukraine as an inspector brightly shows an attitude of Putin towards Kuchma. This is exactly the same as if a Ukrainian official delegation was headed by Vjerka Serdjuchka.

Yulia, prosecutors, “bugs” and a car

- What stage is now the soap-opera “Yulia and Prosecutors” on? Is it possible that you are arrested in the Parliament or at the meeting? Is there a real danger that you will be brought by force to Moscow?

- It is the final but one film that is filmed now. Creators of the film will fired soon. In the final will have the happy end: the real bandits will be arrested, political persecution will be over and in the recovered land everybody will live a happy and long life as it is envisaged in fairy tales.
I have got an information that the Russian secret services have sent a team to Ukraine having a task to capture me and to bring me to Russia where an immunity of the People’s Deputy of Ukraine is not taken into consideration. During my tour to the Eastern part of Ukraine I was followed by a car with Russian mark on it. But I am not afraid of them because I do not have a clear conscience so everything else is their own problems. After the presidential election takes place the political leadership of Russia will have no other choice as to refuse to participate in the venture into which they were involved by our authority and to apologize.

- Many well-known politicians (Yushchenko, Lytvun) state that they are spied. The SSU and other secret services deny that. What is your impression: is it possible?

- On my own I can say that the spying over politicians is the true thing. Moreover, I can suppose that today the Attorney’s General Office, militia and the SSU actually are doing nothing else but spying over the opposition politicians. I am watched for a couple of years already. They are bugging my telephone conversations, my dwelling, my car, follow me with the whole cavalcades, read my letters, intimidate my surrounding, relatives and friends. Sometimes I have an impression that the SSU spies over my cat and my dog.

Let us organize more voting stations on Antarctic Continent!

- The Foreign Affairs Ministry has prepared a request for the Central Election Committee to establish 400 additional voting stations in Russia. In Moscow bid boards in favor of Yanukovych are everywhere. Which way the transparency of the voting procedure will be controlled in the voting stations abroad?

- I can only imagine how it would be in case the big board is placed in Kyiv stating “Ukraine Votes in Favor of Jim Carry” or something like that in favor of Bush. This is so weird! It seems to me that someone has a great benefit gained from these Moscow bid boards because they are of no value in any other terms. As for the creation of the voting stations in Russia these are of course a possibility to do something in favor of the authority candidate since there are not so many willing to vote in favor of Yanukovych in Ukraine. We can assume that the authority will bring the votes in favor of him from the nearest and the most far abroad. I can understand Mr.Yanukovych. In order to get some more votes he would do everything to establish voting stations in Burkina-Faso, in France-Josef Land or in Antarctic Continent. But we have methods to oppose the fabrication of the “outer” voting at the voting stations abroad.

- Is everything OK with the reputation of the domestic sociologists in your opinion?

- The sociology in Ukraine is, of course, not OK. When I see the ratings of Viktor Yanukovych published by “Public Opinion Foundation” of Gljeb Pavlovskyj, the advisor and consultant of Viktor Medevedchuk, I have an impression that this poll has been conducted among the Cabinet of Ministers officials, in the Party of Regions office or in Yanukovych’s headquarters. Only in these places he can have 30% of those sympathizing him.

It is necessary to understand that ratings are only the way to fool people and a psychological manipulation means. Rating engineers count that voters will support the authority candidate because he has a good chance to win. Indeed, nobody carries out those polls. Each candidate for the presidential office has his own favorite sociologist and his own favorite rating. Is it necessary to wonder that the outsiders of the presidential election plan their participation in the second round quite seriously. There is somebody providing them with those ratings. At the same time there are really serious and professionally made. The like polls are being conducted by the mighty analytical centers of the Secret Services and the Domestic Affairs Ministry. However these ratings will never be published because they show a terrific for the authority result: there is no chance and it cannot appear.

- What should be awaited in case of the exit poll? Is it the control over the just victory or over the manipulation in favor of the authority candidate?

- Exit poll that the questioning of people in the day of the election when they are leaving the voting stations is a very efficient and democratic means of control over the election. However fabrications are also possible. We can see the results of the exit poll in Bjelorus during the referendum and assume that the like methods will be used by the Ukrainian authority. There were two organizations that conducted exit polls in Minsk. They were an independent “Gallup” and the state organization. According to Gallup the idea of Lukashenko concerning the eternal Presidency more than 80% of voters. I have no doubts that the Ukrainian authority on October 31 will try to copy the Bjielorussian experience. But we know the sociological organizations that can be really trusted. I would say that the structures founded by Pavlovskyj or by Pohrebinskyj or any other agitation teams of the authority have not belonged and do not belong to them.

- What would you say to a voter on the eve of the election of October 31?

- Dear friends! Without any pathetical words I want to say that on October 31 we have got the chance that is possible once in a century. Be it anyone who wins and life will go on, but what kind of life? Will it be criminal laws, prisoners’ zone rules or the life in the civilized democratic state where a person, his/her well-being will be the most important thing? Free yourself from fear, from lies that are imposed upon you, from distrust and lack of hope. Please, come and vote following to the dictates of your conscience. They will not cheat you. Come to your voting stations in the evening after the results have been counted. Let the authority to feel your breath, your will to defend and affirm your right to have a free democratic country.
