- This week during the honorary meeting before parliamentarians of the Council of Europe You have made an almost sensational statement that Ukraine must be changed into a parliamentary republic. Do You beard existence of president in Ukraine? - I speak against chaos within the country, against diarchy, against every minister having at least three and sometimes more leaders giving absolutely multi-vector commands...
All the countries of the former Soviet Union are independent today. They have the right to formulate and to realize their own national interests. I believe it's the wrong tactic if Russia tries, with the help of various instruments, to restrict the freedom of these states.
The European countries, especially those of the old Europe, don't want to see Ukraine in the EU soon. At the same time, two-thirds of our country is not prepared to see themselves as part of the authoritarian entities that currently surround Russia. That's why, in the short or mid-term, Ukraine will put things in order and introduce European standards at home, and only then discuss all the possible processes of integration.
Tymoshenko: My prognosis that the democratic forces would again prevail during early parliamentary elections are based on [my] familiarity with the mood structure within Ukrainian society. Yes, Ukrainian voters hold a bit of a grudge against democratic parties, against the “orange” forces, because many mistakes have been made. But they will never accept a concept for the development of their country other than [the pursuit of] a European perspective and far-reaching reforms of our internal order that would be based on the rule of law, equal opportunity and government transparency.
Yulia Tymoshenko marches through the entrance of Jerusalem's David Citadel Hotel with a 10-strong male entourage in tow. Head high and smile radiant, she strides, starlet-like, to the elevator, into which she is ushered like a queen. Or at least like the "Orange Princess" she has been coined - a title the head of Ukraine's opposition movement earned not for her lineage or beauty, but rather for her having been a leading fomenter of her country's liberal revolution in 2004. It was her reputation for fearlessly fighting against oligarchs, and the corruption and economic stagnation for which the Ukrainians held them responsible, that paved the way for Yushchenko's presidency and her own premiership.
‘Ukraine today is the Poland or the Czech Republic of the 1990s. All ways are open to us,’ Yulia Tymoshenko told The Spectator, which compares her to another world famous Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher.
Talking to Financial Times Yulia Tymoshenko, former Ukrainian prime minister, promised a business-friendly agenda yesterday if she succeeded in forming a ruling coalition, following her bloc's strong second-place showing in Sunday's parliamentary elections.
